Vanity in humans is natural, it is simply a part of the human condition. Seldom can you find people who are not vain one way or the other. This is because it is human nature to try and make ourselves look good and beautiful. To look good, some spend a fortune to have their bodies and faces “done” by cosmetologists, beauty specialists, and even plastic surgeons.
For everyone else, they just settle for beauty products. The most common is skin care products. But still for some, who cannot afford even good quality beauty products, they just settle to do something with our crowning glory – the hair.
Some dye their hair, some just do some tricks with it like braiding, or putting accessories. And some curl their hair to have a “new look”. There are people who have it permed or curled permanently while others just have it curled temporarily. Permanent curling or perming can last up to several months, depending on the type of hair you have. While temporary curling can stay up until just hours from the time you curl it.
THE CURLING PROCESS
For permanent hair curling, you need to go visit a beauty salon to have it done. But there are talented people who can do it themselves in the comforts of their homes. They just need to have a perming solution handy for the job.
Now for the temporary curls or perm. There are several ways to do it. You can either use “wires”, and curlers or rollers. Or you can also use the ever reliable and dependable, ever handy hairpins. These curling aids may be used provided you know how to use them to achieve the kind of curls you want. But these methods of curling are traditional ones. There are more modern and high tech methods of achieving a curl.
THE MODERN CURLING METHOD
With the fast pace that life is moving today, there are always more modern means and ways to do things. Even in having temporary curls, technology has set in. There are two tools which you can use as modern curling aids – the curling iron and the curling wand. The question now lies with which tool is better, the curling iron or the curling wand. Let us try to get to know each tool. Let us see if we can learn some things about them so we can compare them.
THE CURLING IRON
A curling iron can be used to create tight, formal curls, big, bold waves, thin spirals, or thick tube curls. From big to small you can have whatever curls you want depending on the curling iron. How do we use the curling iron? Here are three methods on how to properly use the curling iron properly:
Method 1: Basic Curling
1.) Heat up the curling iron; 2.) Brush your hair thoroughly; 3.) Apply a heat protectant to your hair; 4.) Separate your hair into sections; 5.) Working in sections, curl your hair; 6.) Once a curl is down, quickly pin it up; 7.) Continue until all of your hair is pinned up; 8.) After the hair is cool, take off all the pins; 9.) Manipulate curled hair if you like; 10.) Spray with hairspray lightly to give your curls a hold.
Method 2: Spiraling Curls
1.) Follow above instructions 1 – 4 for basic curling; 2.) Grab a section to curl. For tighter curls, have smaller sections; 3.) Squeeze the curling iron open and place it near the top of a section of hair; 4.) Manually wrap the entire section of hair around the iron rod; 5.) Clamp the hair inside the iron for approximately 10 seconds; 6.) Loosen your hair and repeat on the next section.
Method 3: Tube Curls
1.) Follow instructions 1 – 4 for basic curling; 2.) Grab one section of hair to curl. For tighter curls, grab smaller sections and for less tighter curls take bigger sections; 3.) Squeeze the curling iron open and place it near the bottom of a section of hair; 4.) Clamp the curling iron shut and twist it so that the hair spirals around it; 5.) Hold the hair inside the iron for approximately 10 seconds; 6.) Loosen your hair and repeat on the next section.
THE CURLING WAND
A curling wand, on the other hand looks just like a curling iron without a clasp. Just like the curling iron, here are methods on how to curl using a curling wand:
Method 1: Basic Curls
1.) Set a solid foundation: Dry your hair completely; brush out your hair; pick your heat setting and use a heat protectant; 2.) Section your hair; 3.) Curl your hair for three to four seconds; 4.) Curl each section; 5.) Mist your hair with a light amount of aerosol hairspray.
Method 2: Beach Waves
1.) Mist on a setting spray; 2.) Curl your hair away from the face: 3.) Leave an inch on the ends uncurled; 4.) Curl towards your face in the back; 5.) Finish off the look.
Method 3: Using a Curling Wand on Curly Hair
1.) Apply a leave-in conditioner; 2.) Scrunch the ends of your hair with gel; 3.) Blow dry your hair from the roots to your tips; 4.) Wrap a small section of hair around the barrel; 5.) Brush out your curls if desired; 6.) Set your look with hairspray.
COMPARISON BETWEEN CURLING IRON AND CURLING WAND
First, let’s decipher which tool is which. A curling iron has a clasp and is used to create polished ringlets (tight or loose). A curling wand has no clasp and is used to create natural waves.
The curling wand creates polished ringlets or hair that spirals downward. You can create everything from tight curls to voluminous waves to piecey waves. While the tool does create ringlets, you can break them up using your fingers to look more like waves. This tool is meant to create natural looking waves (like beachy waves) to mimic a more natural hair texture.
With a curling iron, the cord should be down, and with a curling wand, the cord should be up. The waves the curling ironcreated are a bit more polished and bouncy, while the curling wandcreated more relaxed, natural waves.
So if you were given the opportunity to choose, which would you prefer, a curling iron, or a curling wand? The safe answer will depend on the occasion you are attending and what kind of curls you prefer.
